Meet Our Doctors

Dr. Eric Phelps is a distinguished orthodontist and co-founder of Phelps & Cohen Orthodontics. A San Jose native, he graduated from Leigh High School before pursuing an engineering education at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, where he graduated summa cum laude.

Dr. Phelps earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree and a Master’s Degree in Oral Biology with an emphasis on bone cell research from UCLA School of Dentistry as a UC Regent Scholar. He completed the UCLA Orthodontic Residency while furthering his research. 

Over the years, Dr. Phelps has amassed thousands of hours of continuing education focusing on craniofacial development, temporomandibular disorders, chronic facial pain, airway obstruction, and sleep-related breathing disorders.

His personal battle with severe sleep apnea in 2018 ignited his commitment to integrating airway analysis into his treatment planning. This journey led him to specialize in treating patients with airway obstruction, TMD, and chronic pain, empowering them to achieve optimal airway health and overall well-being.

Outside the office, Dr. Phelps and his wife Suzanne enjoy visiting the Central Coast, especially SLO and Pismo Beach, to relax by the ocean. They also love spending time with their children, one of whom is currently in dental school.

Raised in Princeton, New Jersey, co-founder Dr. Jason Cohen graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from Tufts University. He worked as a software engineer before pursuing a dental degree at UCLA. Dr. Cohen completed his orthodontic specialty training at UCSF. His research on digital radiography and disease detection through computer modeling of trabecular bone has been published in prestigious journals, including the American Journal of Orthodontics.

Dr. Cohen’s engineering background enables him to incorporate precise, innovative techniques into his orthodontic practice. He is particularly interested in the technological advancements in orthodontics, such as digital radiography and early disease detection through computer modeling. 

Outside the office, Dr. Cohen is an avid sports fan and a former collegiate tennis player. He loves staying active through exercising, playing golf, and hitting the tennis courts. Dr. Cohen also cherishes spending quality time with his family, often enjoying sports and outdoor activities together.

Dr. Tran lived in Southern California during grade school before moving to Colorado and calling it her home. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree at the University of Colorado at Denver.

Dr. Tran decided to venture out and chose to attend University of Nevada Las Vegas for her dental degree and conducted research published in the Journal of Cancer Science & Therapy. She completed her orthodontic specialty training at the University of Colorado, where she earned her Master’s Degree with research on polymeric orthodontic aligners. She moved to Northern California after her orthodontic residency to join her husband in his hometown.  

Dr. Tran has a diversified interest in different orthodontic appliances and techniques to treat patients of all ages. She prefers to treat patients with a focus on airway, offering modalities such as skeletal expanders and Temporary Anchorage Devices to help address severe crowding and minimize extractions. She also loves using Invisalign® for patients who prefer a more esthetic option for treatment.

In her personal time, Dr. Tran is quite busy tending to her little family of 2 kids 
with her husband. She also loves food and enjoys exploring new restaurants. She 
is fluent in Vietnamese and has a variety of interests including cooking, traveling 
and drawing.

Dr. Joy Chang was born in Walnut Creek, California and spent her childhood growing up in Hong Kong and Taiwan. She graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a B.S. in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, then completed a 1-year program at the National Institutes of Health, where her research on synthetic biology was published in Science and in Genetics. Transitioning from her work in chemical engineering, Dr. Chang completed her dental school at UCSF, and her orthodontics residency and Master’s Degree at the University of Connecticut. 

Dr. Chang is the recipient of several prestigious awards from the American Association of Orthodontist Foundation and Northeastern Society of Orthodontist for her extensive research and publications on acceleration in orthodontic tooth movement. Dr. Chang has also received the Harry Sicher award and presented at the American Association of Orthodontists annual meeting in 2019. She is Board-Certified and a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. She is also an active member of Angle Society, North Atlantic Component.

After spending several years on the East Coast, Dr. Chang is thrilled to be back in the Golden State! Dr. Chang loves to travel and explore new destinations with her husband in their free time. She also enjoys exploring national parks, hiking, brunching, hosting dinners, and spending time with friends and family.

Born in India and raised in Tampa, Florida, Dr. Puja Patel studied Microbiology and Chemistry at the University of Florida before earning her dental degree at UCLA. She completed additional clinical training in a General Practice Residency at the Philadelphia VA Medical Center. 

After practicing general dentistry for four years, she specialized in orthodontics at Oregon Health and Science University, where her master’s research focused on tooth angulation during treatment with braces versus Invisalign®.

Dr. Patel is passionate about treating interdisciplinary cases involving adult dentition changes due to various factors. She values collaboration with other specialists to provide comprehensive care. Her background in general dentistry allows her to understand and address the nuanced factors affecting adult patients’ dental health.

After living in various parts of the country, Dr. Patel is excited to settle in the Bay Area near her family. She enjoys baking with her niece, playing board games with her nephew, hiking, traveling, and trying virtual dance classes. Additionally, Dr. Patel loves exploring new restaurants and is always open to recommendations.

Dr. Stephanie Tsang is a Bay Area native who grew up in Los Gatos, CA, and attended Saratoga High School. She graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences from the University of the Pacific and earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of the Pacific, Dugoni School 
of Dentistry. 

She completed her orthodontic specialty training and earned a Master’s Degree at the University of Colorado, focusing on the utilization of various anesthetic types for mini-implant placement.

Dr. Tsang believes in early intervention to correct maxillary transverse deficiencies, alleviate teeth crowding, and improve airway function. She has a strong background in using maxillary skeletal expanders. Her personal experience with orthodontic treatment, including an expander and headgear, fuels her passion for making children feel comfortable and confident in the dental chair.

In her personal life, Dr. Tsang enjoys traveling, trying new restaurants, baking, practicing yoga, and hiking with her Miniature Australian Shepherd, Bowie. She loves experimenting with new recipes and sharing her baked goods with family and friends.
